Wales: Community work will gain credits

The qualification, which will be widely available to schools and colleges from September 2007, includes traditional elements such as A-levels but has an overarching structure that includes community work.

Jane Davidson, minister for lifelong learning at the Welsh Assembly Government, told YPN the community element could involve schemes such as The Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

Last week, Davidson introduced regulation to bring youth and community work training at higher education level under the remit of the education watchdog Estyn.

Estyn now inspects all youth and community work training in the country. Previously it only inspected local authority and further education provision.
