WALES: Children's centre at risk of closure

A children's centre in a deprived part of South Wales could face closure after the council said it was considering cutting its grant.

Vale of Glamorgan Council has proposed a number of cost-cutting measures including withdrawing £53,000 a year to the Gibbonsdown Children's Centre in Barry. The centre provides subsidised daycare for children of low-paid parents.

Withdrawal of council funding would mean the centre would not be able to bid for money from the National Lottery and charities such as Children in Need.

"We could keep going on our reserves, but only for a few months," said the centre's manager, Gill Bloom.
