
Following alleged cuts to school support services and complaints from local head teachers, the NAHT took an unprecedented and unanimous vote of no confidence against the leadership of the council in May 2007.
Shortly afterwards, the council dismissed Colin Moran, the NAHT branch secretary for Wakefield, sparking a legal challenge from the union.
Legal proceedings are still on-going but NAHT last month won a preliminary tribunal in Leeds and the council has been ordered to reinstate the branch secretary pending the final hearing.
Mick Brookes, general secretary of NAHT, claimed the problems began when Wakefield's local education authority was dissolved.
He said: "Wakefield was a highly regarded authority but when the education and social care departments merged, most of the education support staff were laid off or relocated."
