A survey by The Children's Society's Good Childhood Inquiry has found that children's professionals believe a preoccupation with celebrity culture is damaging children's sense of community spirit (CYP Now, 2-8 July).

It has harmful effects, but also some positive ones. Celebrity culture is having an increasing impact on children - 70 per cent of teachers we questioned this spring said it influences their students' aspirations. Celebrities can have a positive effect on children and can raise ambitions. However, we and many teachers are deeply concerned that so many children believe celebrity status is available to everyone. Many young people don't understand the hard work it takes to be a celebrity and don't think it is important to do school work because they think education is unnecessary to be one. YES
