Professionals questioned for The Children's Society's survey on the issue of values expressed concern that children's preoccupation with celebrity was having a negative effect on their sense of community spirit. Seven out of 10 professionals said community values among children were not as strong as when they were young. A rise in materialism, as well as the celebrity culture, were among the factors blamed for this change.
Of the children surveyed about values, just one in five thought their local area cared about its young people. Around one in 10 said adults were never friendly to them.
The survey is the last of a series of consultations with children, adults and children's professionals for The Children's Society's Good Childhood Inquiry.
