Volunteering: Young most at risk from CRB charges

The bureau provides free checks for volunteers, but is considering altering its definition of a volunteer (YPN, 21-27 February, p3).

Its discussions are centred on participants of full-time programmes such as those provided by CSV, or funded by youth volunteering charity v, who receive a small weekly allowance.

The organisation is said to be arguing that people receiving anything above out-of-pocket expenses should not be eligible for free checks.

Officials from the Office of the Third Sector intend to meet with the bureau this week to defend free checks for all volunteers.
