The bureau was considering re-wording its definition to clarify who can receive checks free of charge, and there were some concerns that young volunteers would lose out as a result (YPN, 21-27 February, p3).
But last week Vince Gaskell, chief executive of the CRB, told Young People Now there were no longer any plans to apply a redefinition.
A Home Office spokeswoman said free checks are subsidised by fee-paying customers. "The CRB continually audits those customers who apply for free-of-charge checks to ensure that the post meets our definition of a volunteer," she said. "The CRB is always looking at ways to ensure customers understand the definition and did at one stage consider if re-wording would add greater clarity."
