Last year's Russell Commission report on youth volunteering found there were many good examples of young people from Black and minority ethnic communities giving up their time for a good cause. But it also concluded that some voluntary organisations need to work harder to attract young people from a wide range of ethnic groups. They find it difficult to attract ethnic minorities and maintain their interest.
Adam Nichols, chief executive of youth volunteering organisation Changemakers, says many voluntary organisations fail to actively reach out to young people from minority groups. "They're just happy to have young people volunteering, so don't really think about the ethnic make-up," he says.
