Voluntary Sector: Government looks into boosting role

1 min read
The Government is to look at ways of giving the voluntary sector more say over the planning and delivery of children's services following criticism that the green paper largely ignored its important role.

The Department for Education and Skills is drawing up an overarching strategy for its relationship with the voluntary and community sectors working with children. It will look at how the sectors can help assess needs, develop local strategies, and commission and deliver services.

Ian Vallender, policy officer at the National Council for Voluntary Child Care Organisations (NCVCCO), welcomed the plan.

"The green paper was disappointing because it did not explicitly acknowledge the role the voluntary sector plays in the delivery of services to children and families," he said.

"We are pleased the Government has recognised it failed to acknowledge this and we are particularly happy they want us to be involved in developing local and national strategies - not just in delivery."
