Voice of the Young Person Survey; Youth Sport Trust

Teenagers are more likely than adults to take part in sport or exercise for health reasons, according to a Youth Sport Trust survey.

The study of 1,100 11- to 18-year-olds and 500 adults was carried out to find out more about teenagers' attitudes to sport and exercise. Of the teenagers surveyed a third said the main reason for taking part was to help them be fit and healthy. However, when adults were asked the same question just 18 per cent mentioned health benefits as the key factor.

The fun factor of sport is still important to teenagers, with just over a quarter listing this as a reason for taking part, but this was more important to adults with three out of 10 listing this as a factor. The survey also sought to assess how teenagers rate sport compared with other leisure activities, including going out with friends and staying at home playing computer games.
