The government's aim of ensuring the 2012 London Olympics boosts young people's participation in sport has had mixed results so far.
While the government's £140m free swimming scheme has led to 4.4 million free swim sessions for under-16s and over-60s since April, a quarter of councils have still not signed up to it.
Of the 31 sports measured by Sport England between April and the end of June, only table tennis had shown an increase in terms of people taking part at least once a week. Initiatives such as the Sport Unlimited programme, which targets young people who have not previously shown an interest in sport, also received significant funding to help boost participation in sport.
