Uniformed Groups: Boys' Brigade to hold ballot on allowing membership for girls

1 min read

A vote on the measure will be held next September and will be informed by a survey of youth provision for girls in the areas covered by the 1,800 companies that form the brigade.

Martin Waters, director of programmes at the Boys' Brigade, said: "A group of brigade leaders asked the Executive Council to back a motion to allow girls into the organisation, which it accepted. The council has agreed to think about it. The brigade works with churches mainly, and we have often been asked to include girls, especially in areas where there is no provision for them."

Currently the brigade only allows girls to join its Amicus groups, a scheme for churches without an existing boys or girls brigade. Amicus caters for 14- to 22-year-olds and has 500 members, half of whom are young women.
