Training boost for play sector

The sector skills council for playwork will create a network of high-quality training providers in an effort to increase the number of qualified workers in the sector.

SkillsActive made the pledge as it launched a consultation this weekoutlining its vision for playwork.

The council has made increasing the number of fully qualifiedplayworkers its main objective, in response to the government target ofgetting 4,000 playworkers to reach Level 3 by 2011. It also intends toprovide clearer information on training opportunities.

A spokeswoman said: "We need qualifications that are valued by employersand the workforce, and high-quality training opportunities availableacross the UK."

SkillsActive has launched an 11-week consultation open to anyone with aninterest in playwork, particularly practitioners, policymakers andtraining providers.
