The youth work outsider - Janice Shiner, chair, The National Youth Agency

3 mins read Youth Work
After spending three years in New Zealand helping to reform the country's post-16 education system, Janice Shiner has spent the past couple of months preparing to take up her new position as chair of The National Youth Agency (NYA), which she started on 1 April.

After putting together the agency's new board of trustees, who also join this month, Shiner is looking forward to embracing the role of supporter and developer of the youth workforce, as well as continuing The NYA's commitment to championing the voices of young people.

Although impressed at the progress that has been made in youth work during her time away from the UK, Shiner is more than ready to take on the challenges still facing youth workers and the young people they serve in this country.

"With the role of the youth worker now part of a more integrated service, it is a much more complex world with which you are trying to engage," she says. "Although it has been a long time coming, I am impressed with the progress and commitment that has been made, not just by government policies but the funding and support that has come with it."
