The National Youth Agency: YWCA agrees participation priorities

In late August at Warwick University, 25 young women and support staff from 12 YWCA centres used The National Youth Agency's Hear by Right standards framework to agree their participation priorities locally and across the organisation.

"The group was inspiring and a privilege to work with," said Bill Badham, NYA participation manager. "Participation as honest dialogue leading to change happens when leaders demonstrate commitment and accountability."

The second day was led by a team of young women, who planned and prepared overnight. Joined by senior managers, including YWCA chief executive Sarah Payne, detailed plans were drawn up with specific actions, timelines and lead responsibilities. Terri, a young woman from Nottingham, summarised: "It's satisfying knowing what we're saying is going into action and is being pursued."

"Working with and alongside the bosses to create change and make improvements was very encouraging," said Stacy from YWCA London West. "From this, I feel the young women were really heard." For Adolphia from London East the event showed that "this organisation is available to everyone".
