The National Youth Agency: Youthinformation.com looks at... TheEducation Maintenance Allowance

1 min read
Many young people worry that they will be seriously out of pocket if they continue to study after finishing GCSEs. Education Maintenance Allowances (EMAs) were introduced last September. Around half of all 16-year-olds are eligible to receive between 10 and 30 a week - paid directly into their own bank accounts. To qualify, all you need to do is continue in education after Year 11.

HOW TO APPLY FOR THE EMA

All 16-year-olds whose household's income is 30,000 or below can receive the EMA. Pick up an application form from your school, college or local Connexions. Fill the form in with your parents or carers and provide details of your bank account. To receive the money you must have an account so if you haven't yet check the section on youthinformation.com about applying to open one. The EMA will not affect other benefits you receive as it is paid on top of existing support.

This is the first time the Government has opted to give money directly to young people rather than to the learning providers. Pilots of the scheme took place in areas around the country and found that young people responded well to the responsibility given to them with improved attendance and motivation.

For more information, call the EMA helpline on 080 810 16219. People with speech or hearing difficulties who use a textphone can call 0800 056 5344 or visit the web site at www.ema.dfes.gov.uk.
