As many as nine out of 10 cyclists who are involved in road accidents suffer head injuries. Cycle safety organisations are clear that the only way to successfully protect yourself is to wear a cycle helmet. Here are some tips to keep yourself and your bike safe on the roads:

1. Be seen - wear visible clothing and don't cycle too close to cars who may not have seen you.

2. Use cycle routes.

3. Cycling on the pavement causes accidents. The police can caution you for cycling in a pedestrian area.

4. And, lock your bike - don't lose it!
