THE NATIONAL YOUTH AGENCY: Art for art's sake

2 mins read

This is the message contained in Art for art's sake - and the community's, the latest in The NYA Spotlight series of briefing papers. It takes as its starting point the pledge in Resourcing Excellent Youth Services for the provision of facilities for young people "giving an opportunity to participate in personal and social development activities including arts, drama, music, sport, international experience and voluntary action". The briefing states there is now an opportunity to co-ordinate provision and embed the arts in the fabric of youth work.

Aimed at politicians and other community leaders, the briefing shows through brief case studies and research findings how youth arts can contribute to a reduction in crime, can improve academic performance, play a role in revitalising inner cities and provide a powerful way for young people to express their opinions. Other research shows that arts activity provides jobs, stimulates the local economy and offers a wide variety of career options.
