Youth courts are part of the magistrates' court and were set up after the Criminal Justice Act 1991. They deal with offenders aged 10 to 18 years. The age of criminal responsibility is 10 years. If you are under 16 you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian or social worker. Youth courts take place in front of at least two magistrates who have special understanding of youth justice issues. The other side (known as the prosecution) will have a lawyer putting their case. You have a right to a lawyer. A youth court is not just about punishment - it is also responsible for protecting your welfare.
