The National Youth Agency: YouthAction opens a window on a range of options for volunteering

1 min read
Case studies of volunteers up and down the country who give their time to make a difference take centre stage in the latest issue of YouthAction, The National Youth Agency's magazine devoted to young people taking action in their communities.

Packed full of positive stories of community involvement, it shows that volunteering is open to everyone, whatever their background, interests and however much or little time they have available. YouthAction editor Kerry Harrison said: "We hope you enjoy reading about their experiences and that the magazine generates ideas for new projects. Or, if you're new to volunteering, we hope these stories inspire you to take the plunge and get involved.

"Whether you are looking for inspiration, resources, recognition or financial support it's all in the pages of YouthAction."

Some of the highlights in this issue include the story of 19-year-old Merlain Makiadi from Tooting, who raised money for a trip to India to teach English by giving up public transport for a month. Merlain, who grew up in care, said: "People in developing countries have to travel many miles just for water to help their families live, or for a half-decent education, but I have had free travel to school. I wanted to empathise with these people by compromising my own travelling privileges."
