Youth Culture in Newcastle
Lead Agency: YMCA Newcastle
Partners: Northumbria Coalition against Crime
Project: Anyone familiar with the Eldon Square district of Newcastle city centre will know that it has long been a favoured hangout for distinctive youth cultures. It was also for many years the home of the YMCA in the city before it sold off its building to concentrate on project work. This project will see the Y working with the young goths, skaters, grunge and hippy-types who congregate here and in Handyside Arcade. Young people will create a film and photographic archive and collect reminiscences from people who spent their teens there over the past 50 years.
