THE NATIONAL YOUTH AGENCY: Tom Wylie tackles Newsnight

1 min read
The NYA's chief executive, Tom Wylie, appeared on the BBC's flagship news programme Newsnight, on Wednesday 16 July, to participate in a discussion on the Tomlinson Report.

Both Tom and Ted Wragg from Exeter University welcomed the report, which recommends a new baccalaureate scheme, similar to that used in parts of Europe, in place of the goal-based A-Levels.

Tom suggested that young people may see more value in such a system as it gave them "a sense of relevance to the real world and allowed them to see the point of their education". Tom also suggested that Tomlinson's proposals would allow young people to demonstrate a wider range of skills to potential employers, but warned that, to be successful, the new system "must engage the professionals, the parents and the young people themselves".

Earlier in the evening, Tom was also interviewed about the report on the Radio 4 programme The World Tonight.
