The half-day event, held on 21 June, presented the findings of research undertaken by a team from the Universities of Durham, Lincoln and Luton, which addressed the role of detached and outreach youth work in the post-1997 policy environment and, in particular, how it might contribute to the Connexions initiative.
The event was chaired by Tom Wylie, chief executive of The NYA, and featured an overview of the research and key findings by Professor John Pitts, of the University of Luton, and Penny Turner from the research team.
Other speakers included Viv McKee, director of development at The NYA, and Sharon Cohen, head of the Westminster Youth Service.
Wylie said of the report: "This is a powerful, informative piece of research which highlights important issues surrounding the outcome-driven culture of street-based youth work, and represents an important statement regarding the way forward for street-based youth work to integrate with and support the Connexions service."
