Mental health services are undergoing a period of change, and the future direction of their work will be underpinned by a more integrated approach to support and delivery. This Forum, sponsored by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation and the Department for Education and Skills, will examine government policies as they relate to young people in the 16 to 25-year-old age range and their structural and practical implications at local level.
The Forum will take its starting point from a recent survey carried out by the Office for National Statistics which found that mental health problems in young people increase with age and that these problems become more serious and more complex. Adolescence is a particularly vulnerable phase, with significant increases in a range of disorders among young people including eating disorders, depression, self-harm and suicide, drug and alcohol misuse and criminal behaviour.
