Its main objectives are to encourage young people in non-formal settings to read more widely and more frequently.
It also hopes to engage young people in the selection of reading materials, to support their reading through local projects developed in partnership by library staff and youth workers, to encourage development activities that help to build active reading communities in non-formal settings and to develop awareness about the most effective models of delivery.
Six local projects in Dorset, Portsmouth, Stockton, Hertfordshire, Lancashire and Norfolk are piloting the Out of the Box approach. Sue Houlton, project manager at The NYA, said: "The plan is to learn from their experience so that by the end of March we will have increased our understanding about what works and what doesn't in terms of partnership working between library staff and youth workers and how best to develop opportunities for young people's reading in non-formal settings.
