So What's Happening? builds on So, What's New?, which was published by The NYA in 2001. It explores and illustrates what is meant by innovation in youth work by drawing on the experience of 10 projects which, in different ways, are breaking new ground as far as either the young people directly involved or professional youth work are concerned.
In his introduction to So What's Happening? author Bryan Merton acknowledges that "the nature and value of innovation are nowhere more keenly disputed than in the youth service. Some consider the terms 'effective' and 'innovative' as interchangeable. Some juxtapose innovative work and mainstream practice as though they were alternatives and claim that any focus on the one diverts attention from the other."
