THE NATIONAL YOUTH AGENCY: Forum looks at mental health services

1 min read

The Forum explored emerging findings from the National Service Framework including proposals to extend the age range of CAMHS to 18, and additional funding to boost co-operation between local agencies. The Forum heard about research into closer co-operation through Connexions Partnerships and the training and development needs of personal advisers in order to be able to identify mental health problems and to make appropriate referrals. Three projects discussed their work with different groups of young people including preventative work in schools, work with ethnic minorities, peer education work and therapeutic interventions with seriously disturbed young people.

The Forum identified that not all CAMHS are taking full advantage of the range of interventions and services available in an area. Where good inter-agency co-operation does exist, young people can receive timely and appropriate interventions. However, in many CAMHSs professional barriers still exist and there is a need for strategies to encourage co-operation.
