These days everybody claims to do youth work. In response to the agendas set by Every Child Matters, Youth Matters and Care Matters, youth workers have evolved into local multi-agency teams, pooling budgets and integrating their processes to treat more holistically the needs of young people. As they do so the case is being made to recognise and reward the distinctive contribution of youth work.
It is timely therefore to investigate the practice; to observe and explain how youth workers apply their skills. Ofsted reports tell us almost nothing about what youth workers actually do. While young people consistently testify to the difference youth work makes to them, the practice itself tends to remain unexplored.
