Youth Work: Voices of Practice

A Research Report by Durham University and Weston Spirit

By Jean Spence and Carol Devanney

This book, the culmination of two years' research, emerged from a series of conversations between representatives of Weston Spirit and Durham University Community and Youth Work Studies Unit. Initially the dialogue was motivated by the possibility of evaluating the youth work methods of Weston Spirit, but, as it developed, it became apparent that there were other, broader and more urgent issues to research that related to the nature of youth work itself.

From the different perspectives of youth work practice, theory and education, there was a mutual awareness of disquiet among youth workers about the changing nature of the conditions of face-to-face practice. Anecdotal and research evidence suggested that the aspects of work that workers most valued, and which differentiated it from other professional approaches to work with young people were being eroded by policy and funding decisions made by outsiders.
