Although I had never taken part in a rally before, I decided to go the whole hog and volunteer as a steward - and as someone of slight build I was certainly hoping that the plans for a peaceful demonstration would prevail.
Helped by a bright, blustery day, the event - organised by Save the Children on behalf of a coalition of organisations including The National Youth Agency - was a huge success with thousands turning out to make their feelings known. Once I had been assigned my duties for the day, which began with guarding umpteen bottles of water reserved for the band, I accompanied the marchers as they descended on Trafalgar Square. My particular role was to make sure that no over-enthusiastic participants got in the way of the man with the big bass drum en route.
