The National Youth Agency: Comment - Doing the Lambeth Talk

1 min read
Our newspapers have been full of reports and comment about the Lambeth Conference to be held in Canterbury this month and the rival conference held recently in Jerusalem. While reflecting on these reports, two events I have attended came to mind.

The first was the Episcopal Youth Event, Kentucky, in 2005 where the 60 bishops present were told to listen to young people's views. Young people from the USA, Haiti, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic and Colombia spoke passionately about climate change, war, poverty, racism and issues that divided the church. The bishops listened and I believe some changed their views - it certainly made me think!

The second event was a young people's party I went to at St George's College, Jerusalem. It was organised by Kids for Peace - a group of Christian, Muslim and Jewish young people who party and go on holidays together and show respect for each other's faith. I saw them as a symbol of hope in a divided city and a land tortured by conflict. Politicians may talk about "road maps" for peace. These young people were demonstrating peace in their lives as a community.
