National Youth Agency: Comment - Keeping the promise

It was interesting to see the Royal Mail has marked the centenary of the Girl Guides with the launch of a set of stamps detailing a range of activities young girls and women can get involved in.

Looking at the pictures it is far removed from my days in the Guides, where I failed miserably at getting my Entertainer's Badge for a magic trick that went very wrong. I never did find the rabbit.

I am pleased to note that the uniforms have changed completely, thank goodness. Dressing up in that awful blue smock on a Monday night after spending a day in my equally garish green school uniform that made me look like a relative of Kermit the Frog, was always a bone of contention.

However, for all my badge attempts and the moaning about the uniform, I look back with fondness at my time in the Brownies and the Girl Guides. It's funny how, in your adult life, you take for granted the skills and friendships you acquired.
