In almost every circumstance young people are more likely to thinkdeeply and respond effectively if they are shown that the fruits oftheir labour will have positive and real change. And yet, if we look atthe varied arena of research - usually the domain of "specialists" andacademics - the voice of young people themselves seems strangelysilent.
Partly to counter this and partly to obtain better, less tokenistic andmore impactful results from research, The National Youth Agency hasestablished the Young Researcher Network (YRN). This is a partnershipbetween The NYA and 15 youth organisations to value, support andencourage research led by young people. By providing vital researchtraining as well as small grants directly to young people, The NYA isnow supporting a range of youth-led research groups in an initiativethat will run till March 2009. The results should increase both our ownknowledge of young people's lives and support young voices in theirlocal communities on a national scale.
