The quote comes from Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England, via US president John F. Kennedy. And, to be honest, King referred to schools rather than youth clubs, but the point remains the same.
Mr King was talking at the launch of the Chance to Shine appeal earlier this year. This initiative is aimed at regenerating competitive cricket in state schools. Over the next 10 years the plan is to build on the 12 pilot schemes that have been rolled out in 75 schools this summer and redevelop cricket in 6,000 state schools.
Hopefully the schools will leap at the opportunity but, in an already congested curriculum and with the fervour that accompanied England's epic Ashes battle with the Australians already fading to just a cosy memory, that's perhaps a bit of a long shot. More of a hopeful slog-sweep than a perfectly timed and executed cover drive.
