The National Youth Agency Comment: Feeling the strain

Two reports out this week, ostensibly about very different things, may have more connecting them than we might at first think.

The first to catch my eye said that young offenders leaving custody are not receiving enough support to fit back into society. Young people leaving secure units are unprepared for life in the outside world and often struggle to reintegrate into their communities, according to the report from Ofsted.

Young people are often left feeling "unsettled" and "unwanted" by the lack of a clear plan for their release.

The report says pre-release provision for children and young people and help for them to live independently is insufficient. It calls for well co-ordinated education, training and support - note the support here - to help meet their needs and reintegrate into the community.
