The National Youth Agency: Comment - Open for the summer

1 min read
Well that all seemed to go very well. Phoning around youth services to see how open weekend fared the messages coming back were all positive and upbeat - lots happening, and lots of different things on the go (see story, next page) - from club- based events to outdoor activities. Good stuff all round.

But, isn't it interesting that no sooner have the lights been switched off and the doors closed on open weekend, than the first survey of the summer holidays lands on the doormat, telling us that with those long lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer to look forward to more than a third of children spend less than an hour outside each day.

The National Trust survey says that eight out of 10 young people feel they spend too much of their time indoors either watching television or playing computer games - almost a quarter doing this for 14 hours a week. Most parents (87 per cent) wish their children would spend more time outside, but a quarter say they are put off by safety concerns.
