The glass half empty brigade is already announcing it dead in the water, but the doomsayers may just be jumping the gun on this occasion.
The realistic aims for the conference recognise it will not yield a treaty with all the small print in place. But there does seem to be a belief that it at least stands a chance of reaching agreement on four political essentials, creating some worldwide clarity on the way ahead. In a nutshell these are: how much are the industrialised countries willing to reduce their emissions of greenhouse gases, what about the major developing countries, what help do they need in managing this and how is the finance sorted? Of course, as ever, the devil will be in the detail.
