As people live longer we can already see changes in the dynamics of the family. Families have fewer children but this is matched by an increase in the number of older people still alive, thus enabling multi-generational families to live together, especially at the beginning and end of their lives. A scenario for our whole society is one that has lower economic growth; sees its jobs exported to India and China; reduces the welfare state to the status of a safety net; and has a decline in its public services as people resist higher taxes. All these factors will put greater pressure on today's young people as they age.
