All of which brought me back to a long-term preoccupation of mine: that we are so saturated with a diet of antagonistic and often violent family relationships on television and elsewhere in the media that we've allowed these perceptions to overwhelm the evidence of our own experiences. We seem at one and the same time to subscribe to the view presented in the media of fractured communication between different generations, while actually enjoying pretty good relationships with our own offspring and their friends.
We appear to have bought into the media model, believing our personal circumstances to be the exception, rather than, as I suspect, the rule.
