Rarely have people been so exercised and confused about the morality of conflict, the real or imagined reasons behind polarised standpoints and the motivations of different interest groups. Uncertainty breeds fear and fear too often breeds retreat into the known and an unwillingness to explore other views. The sometimes-hysterical media coverage of asylum seekers and refugees is a case in point. Individual cases are used to justify the wholesale condemnation of all asylum seekers and refugees. It takes courage - or desperation - to leave family, friends and culture behind, never knowing if you will ever see them again or knowing what the future holds.
