The NYA believes that youth work and community based interventions, which involve young people, have a central and significant role in tackling the complex causes. These types of interventions can provide educational and innovative diversionary activities for young people involved or at risk of involvement in gang-related street violence, particularly those outside of mainstream education. Research has shown that there are a number of risks and protective factors that influence a young person's decision about whether to join a gang, and these factors can be addressed through effective youth work practice.
