How many pupils? The school provides 80 places for 11- to 19-year-olds with complex needs. Most pupils have severe or profound and multiple learning difficulties. The rest are on the autistic spectrum or have sensory, medical or physical disabilities.

What's unique about it? The Michael Tippett School was the first special educational needs school to be built under the government's Building Schools for the Future (BSF) scheme. It was recently named the most inspirational and successful project and best designed new school at the first BSF awards.

What facilities does it offer? The school has state-of-the-art facilities including a hydrotherapy pool, learning and sensory garden, outdoor teaching areas and a sensory room. The school's colour scheme is designed to be therapeutic and the building is sustainable and eco-friendly. Every classroom has an interactive plasma screen or whiteboard.

Who built the school? The school was designed by architects Marks Barfield and built by Apollo Education. The school's IT and interactive teaching resources are provided by the software company RM.
