The Kennedy Leigh Children and Family Centre, Barnet, London

What is going on? Norwood, a UK charity helping families in the Jewish community cope with disabilities and social disadvantage, has opened a nursery within its family centre to improve support for disabled children.

It was recently officially opened by the charity's patron, Cherie Blair, although it has been operational since last September. The nursery is open to children with and without learning disabilities.

How does it work?

There are 14 children attending the setting, and that number will increase to 30 by next year, as each child is given time to settle down before another is introduced. The nursery is specially designed for inclusive provision, with a multi-sensory room and a wide range of specialist equipment.

What else?

Around a third of the children who attend the setting have some form of special need, and all have regular access to support and advice from educational psychologists, occupational therapists and speech and language therapists who are based on site. The setting was given an overall rating of "good" in its first Ofsted inspection, and "outstanding" in parent partnership and inclusion.
