Children Today

1 min read Health Disabled children and young people
The UK-wide Children Today charity was set up in 1994 to provide disabled children and young people with specialist equipment to help improve their quality of life. There is no statutory right for young
people with disabilities to be provided with equipment they need by the government or NHS, a "gap" that the charity attempts to fill. It relies
entirely on voluntary donations.

How much is available? This depends on the cost of the equipment. Grants are generally limited to a maximum of £1,000. Each piece of equipment is gifted to the child concerned, it is not a loan, and it is owned by the child, not their parents or guardians. The charity provides ongoing support so the children can return for further funding as their needs develop or they outgrow their equipment. The charity helps an average of 20 to 30 children each month.

What it will fund? The equipment that the grant will buy must improve and enhance the life of the young person and help them reach their full potential. The charity funds specialised equipment such as: individually adapted electric wheelchairs, walking aids, trikes, educational toys specially designed for children with disabilities, adapted car seats, lifting aids and posturepedic sleep equipment.
