Tesco trainees to take DoE Awards

Youth Work
The Duke of Edinburgh's (DoE) Award has teamed up with supermarket giant Tesco to offer young staff members the chance to gain qualifications.

The Tesco School Leavers Diploma allows young people who leave school to join the retailer to study for a Gold DoE Award.

The young employees will have to complete two residential projects, learn a range of skills relevant to their job and also undertake volunteering activities. Participants will also take part in a gruelling four-day expedition to put the skills they've learned to the test.

About 29 per cent of Tesco's new positions are filled by 16- to 24-year-olds.

Peter Westgarth, chief executive at the DoE Award, said: "It's great news that leading employers are now offering the opportunity for young people to do their Duke of Edinburgh's Award. It will give young people life and employability skills."
