The report, Family or Friends? The influence of peers on young people'said thousands of parents felt "helpless and out of touch as they takesecond place to their children's friends, role models and evencelebrities".
The report added that the influence of peers was often blamed for theonset of risky behaviours such as drug use. But Dorit Braun, chiefexecutive of Parentline Plus, said peers and friends could also have apositive influence on children.
The report's recommendations included making sure schools, particularlythose in deprived areas, have the infrastructure to encourage "positivepeer relationships".
