Letter: Don't put the blame on parents

1 min read
Parentline Plus was very saddened by the remarks made by David Hart, general secretary of the National Association of Head Teachers, in his annual conference speech. He criticised parents for their lack of control over their children, lack of responsibility for that behaviour, and for the long-term negative effect this has on schools and education.

In our experience, parents take their responsibilities very seriously. But they also need to be taken seriously, to be heard and supported, and to bring up children in a country that enjoys and supports families.

Those who are more vulnerable, and are facing a multitude of complex problems on a daily basis, do not need blame. Many of them may have had bad experiences of their own education, and find it difficult to engage with their child's school.

The solutions to helping parents to do their best are varied, but must start by enabling them to articulate their needs, and working with them to identify solutions that will work for them and for their families. Sadly, many of the parents who contact us have tried to get help and support from many agencies, and feel let down by professionals who have little time or expertise in actually listening to, and working with, parents.
