The move follows the leaking of an evaluation of the scheme, which isset to say that local Sure Start programmes have not made a differenceto children and families (Children Now, 14-20 September).
"Sure Start is a 10-year programme and has not gone from start to finishyet. Parents on the ground would disagree with the finding that it hasnot made a difference," said Sue Huyton, director of Sure StartNetherley & Valley in Liverpool.
Newham's cabinet member for children and young people, Rev QuintinPeppiatt, and Chris McLoughlin, head of Sure Start at Manchester CityCouncil also came out in defence of the scheme.
