The funding comes from the Home Office's pooled budget pilot, which puts all funding normally allocated to local agencies for drug prevention schemes into one fund overseen by local drug action teams.
The initiative, which was set up in July 2002, is being piloted in 25 local authority areas and could be extended to all 125 drug and alcohol action teams in the UK. The single pot of funds lets agencies pool any funds left over in an agency's drugs budget.
Cath Young, manager at Knowsley's Drug and Alcohol Action Team, said: "With bigger amounts of money, you can do better things."
