Analysis: Policy - Substance misuse - Drug education fights for itsfuture

3 mins read

A healthy chunk of drug and alcohol education money is about to disappear. From this year, the Government is to slice 61m - about 10 per cent - from its Young People's Substance Misuse Partnership Grant (YPN, 11-17 April, p6).

The grant funds both the treatment and education work of drug and alcohol action teams but the cuts will only affect education and prevention work.

Martin Barnes, chief executive of DrugScope, says: "The Government's argument that young people's drug use has "stabilised" is not good enough. In terms of education and prevention work we cannot afford to take our foot off the pedal. We also don't know what will happen to funding after next year if responsibility for drug education passes to children's trusts. It will be disastrous."
